    ADSL has been awful in the past on these old phone lines. Covad's "safe mode" makes the connection stable. Others may gripe about being put automatically in safe mode but in my case, it's the only way I can rely on this connection. Speed is 928/384.

    At the time of this writing (Jan 2003) a good news server is currently in beta but this roller-coaster is getting old very fast.

    Earthlink seems to hold on a bit to the "old school" of ISPs. Either that or my last awful excuse for something to run a network (a cable company) makes Earthlink look like a breath of fresh air.

    MAY 2004 UPDATE: I'm glad I have not needed to call support much. Unlike the past, Earthlink seems to have abandoned it's "old school" atmosphere. The only thing keeping me here is a decent (for an ISP) news server and the fact I can run my own mail server.

    JULY 2004 UPDATE: It took a total failure of DSL service to get a good SBC service person to give the line a good going over. I'm now steady at 3008/384 and happy as a lark. I've adjusted my ratings accordingly. Please feel free to examine my progress:
