News Briefs: Hughes Supports Sprint on Networx

MULTIPLATFORM -- Hughes Network Systems said this week that it will be a member of Sprint's team for the recently-awarded U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Networx Enterprise contract. Hughes will provide managed network access and internet services via broadband satellite as a subcontractor in support of federal mission-critical telecommunications requirements. The Networx Enterprise contract has a minimum revenue guarantee of $50 million to be divided among the Enterprise awardees during the life of the 10-year contract.

HUGHES COMMUNICATIONS reported first quarter revenues increased 13 percent year-over-year to tally a record $223 million. The company's Hughes Network Systems division increased its EBITDA 54 percent to $25 million with an adjusted EBITDA increase of 48 percent to $26 million.

The latest edition of NSR's Broadband Satellite Markets report suggests that broadband services via satellite experienced tremendous growth during 2006 and is poised to have a successful future moving forward.

Satellite solutions provider Hughes Network Systems is supplying its broadband satellite system to Canadian service provider Galaxy Broadband Communications for enterprise and government customers. The system will utilize its Network Operations Center installed at a teleport in Hamilton, Ontario, Hughes said.

Consumer advocates hope the FTC will take a hard look at how ISPs advertise broadband service by telling consumers that, for a certain monthly fee, they can access the Internet at speeds "up to" -- and then make a claim about speed.

When the chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission delivered an important speech last year about competition in cyberspace, she ended her remarks by focusing on an issue that directly affects the 65 million U.S. households that have broadband Internet service.

"We will continue our consumer protection work," FTC chairwoman Deborah Platt Majoras said at a conference in Aspen, Colo., "by, for example, holding Internet service providers accountable for any false or deceptive representations to consumers concerning the nature of the Internet access provided."

Hughes Communications, best known for its HughesNet (formerly DirecWAY) satellite broadband service, applied to list its common stock on the NASDAQ Global Market.

Hughes' common stock has been quoted on the over-the-counter market since it became a publicly traded company in February. Until commencement of trading on NASDAQ, Hughes' common stock will continue to be traded on the OTC Bulletin Board under the symbol "HGCM."

Listing applications are subject to review and approval by NASDAQ's Listing Qualifications Department for compliance with all NASDAQ Global Market requirements, the company said.

Hughes Network Systems said the number of HughesNet small business and residential subscribers grew to 300,000 during the second quarter, representing a 19 percent increase when compared to the same period in 2005. Hughes said that during the first half of 2006, the company averaged more than 10,000 new subscribers a month. HughesNet is formerly known as DirecWAY.
