NEW YORK (AP) -- Students late for school and workers late for their jobs because of New York City subway delays can get notes from the transit agency to give to their teachers and bosses. The New York City Transit division says it gives passengers the notes so they can prove they're not lying about being delayed while riding the subway. Passengers request the delay verification letters over the phone. NYC Transit verifies the date and time of the delay and sends an official note in the mail in one or two weeks. It mails out 34,000 notes a year. It's working on an online system so it can take requests on the Internet and e-mail the excuse letters. » www.1010wins.com/Workers--Studen···/3404800comments? NEW YORK (AP) -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he'll work with the New York City Council to find a ``balance'' regarding this year's $400 homeowners' rebate. Appearing Friday on WOR Radio, Bloomberg said: ``We will work with (Council Speaker) Christine Quinn and we'll find some balance. It's not going to be easy. It's not going to be pretty.'' In the economic turndown, the city has to reduce expenses, he says, ``without killing any major programs.'' Bloomberg first proposed canceling the checks to save $256 million. After the city's budget director said that would require council approval, Bloomberg had conceded: ``It's probably up in the air.'' Spotted herecomments?
