SAN JOSE, Calif.- September 16, 2008 - Expanding on its Data Center 3.0 product portfolio, Cisco is delivering new storage area network (SAN) technology designed specifically to help customers improve performance and scalability, simplify SAN management, increase data security, and enhance SAN services in Virtual Machine (VM) environments. Together, these new technologies support Cisco's vision to help its customers to design and build next generation data centers. The Cisco vision for Data Center 3.0 entails the real-time, dynamic orchestration of infrastructure services from shared pools of virtualized server, storage and network resources, while optimizing application performance, service levels, efficiency and collaboration.

The new Cisco SAN technology includes three Cisco MDS 9000 Family 8-Gigabit-per-second (8-Gbps) Fibre Channel switching modules and new capabilities in Cisco's SAN operating system, which has been re-branded NX-OS. Cisco announced plans to buy Pure Networks, a company that has developed software aimed at making home networking easier, for $120 million.

Pure's software helps users set up and manage networks.

Transformational change is rippling through the high-tech industry at an extraordinary pace, according to Cisco Systems Chief Executive John Chambers.

"There is an understanding that the market is in tremendous transition, and when that occurs, profit contribution and job creation also goes up in the air," the buoyant leader said last week.

Chambers says a new Internet revolution is under way, with golden opportunities for smart companies and perilous consequences for businesses that fail to read the tea leaves correctly.

"The industry, I think, is littered with people who make the mistake of playing their hand too conservatively, especially during periods of market transitions," he said. "So while Cisco will make many mistakes, hopefully it will not be one of not trying to catch transitions and taking good business risks when they're appropriate."

In a bid to combat cheating and to "protect the value of certifications" Cisco now requires all exam takers to provide digital photos and digital signatures during the admission process at Pearson VUE, Cisco's primary test centers.

According to Cisco: "This new layer of identity authentication will help to ensure candidate identity and result in increased assurance that individuals are presenting accurate certification records in the marketplace."

Cisco is warning that a flaw in its Firewall Services Module could result in a reload of the module, or if exploited repeatedly, could result in a sustained denial-of-service attack.

FWSM is an integrated firewall module for Cisco Catalyst 6500 switches and Cisco 7600 Series routers.

In its security alert issued Wednesday, Cisco says there are "no known instances of intentional exploitation of this issue," but that it has "observed data streams that appear to be unintentionally triggering this vulnerability."

Cisco Systems on Wednesday detailed its plans to bring the WLAN into 2008 and said the new 802.11n Wi-Fi standard will be a major component of the wireless environment moving forward.

Chris Kozup, senior manager of mobile solutions marketing for San Jose, Calif.-based Cisco, said the WLAN is in a state of transition as 2007 draws to a close.

Networking major Cisco Systems is looking to tap opportunities in the small and medium business (SMB) segment in the country.

The company has decided to take its networking solutions to SMB customers, on a mobile van, to explore opportunities in IT, biotechnology, pharma, automotive and textiles.

Under a programme called ‘Network On Wheels’ (NOW), a customised van with a live network environment on board will visit industrial locations across Karnataka, hosting live demonstrations for customers.

The Cisco van will demonstrate interactive technology solutions designed for the SMBs to enhance their competitive advantage, increase productivity, enhance customer care and increase user satisfaction.

Cisco CEO John Chambers announced that they are going to discontinue the Linksys brand and replace it with new and redesigned Cisco branding.

Linksys was acquired by Cisco in 2003 and Cisco kept the brandname because it was better known in the U.S. than Cisco was for the consumer. But Cisco's CEO Chambers says there's little advantage in that when you go globally, therefore they are now killing off the Linksys brandname.

Cisco confirmed that the networking problem Duke University experienced involving Cisco's wireless network and Apple's iPhone was caused by a Cisco network issue. Cisco says it has worked closely with Duke and Apple to identify the source of the problem.

A two-sentence e-mail from a Cisco PR spokeswoman to Network World confirmed the problem was caused by a “Cisco-based network issue.”
