CALGARY/AM770CHQR - A new survey from Statistics Canada suggests that 20.2 per cent of the population who live in the Calgary Health Region were regularly exposed to second-hand smoke in public places last year.

The information on second-hand smoke data and other key health indicators was released Tuesday by Statistics Canada as part of its Canadian Community Health Survey.

The survey found that those in the Calgary health region aged 12 and over who were exposed to second-hand smoke in 2005 remained about the same as 2003, the last time the survey was conducted. The previous survey showed that 21.9 per cent of the local population had second-hand smoke exposure in public places.

BRAMPTON, Ontario (Reuters) - Canadian prosecutors will outline details of their case against an alleged home-grown terrorist ring at a court hearing on Tuesday, after charging some of them with plotting to cause an explosion and training, or being trained, as terrorists.

The 17 Muslim men, five of them under the age of 18, were arrested over the weekend in Canada's largest counterterrorism operation, and police said more arrests were possible.

One lawyer said he planned to ask for a bail hearing to be held in two weeks. "We're more in the dark than you guys," Rocco Galati told reporters in the heavily guarded Brampton courthouse where Tuesday's hearing will take place.

OTTAWA -- Federal Health Minister Tony Clement is frustrated by what he sees as the apparent unwillingness of the provinces to move quickly to develop lists of acceptable waiting times for critical medical procedures.

Only Quebec, which will pay to send patients to other jurisdictions if they cannot receive hip and knee replacements and cataract surgery within six months of diagnosis, has taken steps to enact a waiting-time guarantee, Mr. Clement said yesterday.

ATLANTA — You can add Canada to the list of nations that are healthier than the United States of America.

Americans are 42 per cent more likely than Canadians to have diabetes, 32 per cent more likely to have high blood pressure, and 12 per cent more likely to have arthritis, Harvard Medical School researchers found. That is according to a survey in which American and Canadian adults were asked over the telephone about their health.

The study comes less than a month after other researchers reported that middle-aged, white Americans are much sicker than their counterparts in England.

Smokers in Ontario and Quebec are bracing for a blast of fresh air as both provinces count down to a comprehensive ban on smoking in enclosed public places.

The bans are scheduled to take effect as of 12:01 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Anti-tobacco activists say the changes will be a tougher sell in Quebec than in Ontario, where municipal bans are already in effect in many cities.

Survivors of a fatal fire on a submarine today spoke of their experience as Canada’s defence minister said he could not rule out suing the British Government.

Bill Graham, speaking after a fire crippled HMCS Chicoutimi on her maiden voyage and claimed the life of one its crew, said Canada could take legal action against the Ministry of Defence.

He was speaking as her 54-strong crew, recovering from their ordeal at a Scottish hotel, said they thought they were going to die at sea.
